The traveling showman Caligari puts the sleepwalker Cesare on display in his booth at a fair. Cesare briefly wakes up and relates a prophecy for a member of the audience, after which a chilling series of murders begins and a young woman is abducted from her bedroom at night. In free associations with silent films, the actors in the play ask themselves: Who is this Caligari? Who is the monster here: the sleepwalking Cesare or the manipulative Caligari? In an open process, the players examine from alternating perspectives the changing power relationships that result from the answers given to these questions. During this time, a film is also being produced. The performance offers an evening filled with Cesare’s dreams, as well as a contemplation of the subjects of fear, the unfortunate combination of power and arbitrariness, and a possible escape as well – an emancipation.
