There's a dragon in everyone. (Evgeny Schwartz)

Some might say the days of heroes are over, but the political fairy tale “The Dragon“ has a fearless hero who’s not afraid to risk his life to save others: Lancelot is a knight-errant who uses his wits and his weapons to free a town from the tyrannical dictatorship of a dragon. The townspeople are obviously thrilled, but their happiness is short-lived, as the town’s scheming mayor uses the resulting power vacuum to establish his own dictatorship and take away the people’s liberties once again. The mayor, however, failed to consider what Lancelot might think about this, and our hero thus prepares to do battle once again – this time not just for the townspeople but also for the woman he loves.

Evgeny Schwartz was a writer who loved fairy tales. He also had a unique talent for using the fantasy genre as a vehicle for revealing certain truths about the society he lived in.

Translated from the Russian by Günter Jäniche.
