You know the story. A crack of lightning, a mad genius, an unholy creature. The world of course remembers the monster, not the man. Sometimes when you look closely there is more to the tale. Sometimes the monster is the man.
(from “Victor Frankenstein”, directed by Paul McGuigan)
“frankenstein#createyourown” examines the question of what makes a human being human. Mary Shelley’s book “Frankenstein,” which was published a little over 200 years ago, serves as the basis for this play, which was developed by the inclusive RambaZamba Youth Club. Shelley’s book tells the story of the relationship between the scientist Victor Frankenstein and the creature he brings to life. The story is about the search for identity, recognition, and love.
If one was to create a being / human / creature today, what would such a creature look like, and would it have the same longings? What type of traits would it have? How would people act toward it, and what would be the most important things that it would have to be taught so that it could navigate its way through life? Would this creature – this new human of the 21st century – have to be perfect, or even “normal?” Or is it instead perhaps the small cracks that let the light in, so to speak, and make life and its creatures so interesting?
