21 downbeat is, in changing lineups, actors from the RambaZamba Theater together with composer and musician Leo Solter. The band’s inclusive principles: intoxication and ecstasy, or rather, oomph and confetti! Working outside conventional boundaries and expectations, the band members create a highly individual sound from their own texts and from poems by contemporary female authors. Perhaps the musicians could be described as satyrs — cheerful demons in the retinue of Dionysus, hard to tame, for whom our usual boundaries and notions simply don’t matter.
The debut album, featuring lyrics by the award-winning author Yoko Tawada, was released in summer 2021 on the Keller label. At “Hi Freaks,” the late-night show at the RambaZamba Theater, 21 downbeat performed regularly with a rotating cast of guest musicians. As part of the Pop-Kultur Festival, the band also created the evening “Rausch Royal” (2018), the pop opera “Der Ring” (2019), and the program “Berlin” (2022), featuring songs from the 1920s. 21 downbeat has also performed at venues and events including BERLIN is not BERLIN, the Come Together Experience in Hamburg, Mensch Meier, the Kantine am Berghain, and Fusion.
